1st Annual Shamrock Open Sets Records
The 1st Annual Shamrock Open was held on Saturday, June 7th at Tara Hills Golf Course in Papillion NE and it was a tremendous success. In its inaugural year, tourney organizers, Joe Puetz ‘01 and Nick Puetz ’97, hoped to have “about 75 players and perhaps break even with expenses.” The day before the tourney 116 golfers had pre- registered and 118 actually came to play. Thanks to many generous sponsors and the great turnout, the tourney also netted $3,500—all of which was directed to help purchase new lockers for the Scotus locker room renovation project. The number of participating golfers and the amount of money raised were both new highs in the recent history of Scotus golf tourneys. (The Shamrock Open replaced the Alumni and Friends Golf Tourney held in Columbus the eight previous years.)
Winners of the first flight were Wayne Morfeld, Ryan Nietfelt, Jon Misfeldt and John
Petersen (Pictured Below). In addition to a flight prize, the first flight winners were each presented with a
Tourney sport coat from a local Goodwill store–with the $8.00 price tags still attached to
the coat!
The threesome of Mike Cielocha ‘79, Erik Hash ‘94 and Frank Spenceri (Pictured Below) won
the second flight. A casual dinner was held after the tourney in the clubhouse where flag
and flight prizes were awarded.
