As Jerry Reed once sang, when you're hot, you're hot.
And, baby, Columbus Scotus boys basketball is red hot right about now.
Continuing what has been an amazing string of victories, the Shamrocks defeated Grand Island Central Catholic 51-50 in overtime Tuesday night in the quarterfinals of the Centennial Conference tournament. It was only the second loss of the season for GICC (14-2), while Scotus improved to a sneaky-good 9-5.
Over the past couple of weeks the Shamrocks have won six in a row, including victories over state-ranked teams like Lincoln Christian, Norfolk Catholic and Archbishop Bergan, and you can add GICC to that list. Throughout the season Scotus has played solid defense, and has in fact allowed 55 points or less during this hot streak, but in recent weeks the team has figured out a way to score points. An added 10-15 points per game makes a difference, a big difference.
With the win Scotus will now tackle once-beaten Council Bluffs (IA) St. Albert's, a team which beat Bishop Neumann, 58-55, on Tuesday night. While you still have to figure St. Cecilia is the favorite to win this thing, it's going to take quite an effort to beat the Shamrocks.PARENTS! Coaches Corner
As we approach the end of our regular season I want to recognize our senior basketball players and their parents. This group has had a tremendous impact on our basketball program. I use the word impact because that is the type of people they are-impact people. An impact person changes the culture around them for the better. They do this by their actions and the examples that they set on a daily basis. Our players are high character people and that is a direct reflection on the way they have been raised. Parents have entrusted their sons to us as coaches in the hope that they will enjoy the sport they are participating in and learn some lessons along the way. I am extremely proud of this group for they have handled themselves and the enthusiasm they bring to everything we do. So Tony, Taylor, Jared, Lucas, Kirby, Chase thank you for all of your hard work! You have built yourself into winners on and off the court. It is a privilege to work with you on a daily basis.
