PHYSICAL EDUCATION & HEALTH
Grades 7-8
Ful Year - Meets Every Other Day
Required

This is a required course for all boys and girls in grades 7 and 8. The course will deal with two concepts. The first concept will be the health and physical well-being of each student. Through various activities, strength, flexibility, and cardiovascular endurance will be worked on. Secondly team and individual sports will be taught.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Grade 9
Full Year - 5 Credits - Meets Every Other Day
Required

This is a required course for all 9th grade boys and girls. In this class all students will be introduced to Scotus' strength program.


PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Grade 10
Full Year - 5 Credits - Meets Every Other Day
Required

This course will review and expand upon fitness concepts taught in the junior high curriculum. Strength training, cardiovascular conditioning, and various team and individual sports, modified for the co-educational setting, will be emphasized.

HEALTH
Grades 11-12
One Semester - 5 Credits
Elective

Elective course for juniors and seniors covering current health issues such as safety and emergency care, stress management, suicide, eating disorders and weight control, HIV virus, and health-related choices concerning drugs. Also, students will attain CPR certification.

WELLNESS
Grades 11-12
One Semester - 5 Credits

The Wellness class will give students the opportunity to be physically active on a regular basis. Workouts will consist of 2 days of various aerobic conditioning activities and 2 days of strength training or toning exercises in the weight room. Some choice of activities will be allowed on an individualized basis, other workouts will be carried out as a class. The 5th day weekly will include discussion material covering basic exercise principles, techniques of achieving proper body composition, and basic nutritional information and its role in achieving overall wellness. A fee of approximately $10.00 will be charged for a cholesterol and blood pressure screening. Additional activities at the YMCA are also available including use of the indoor track and fitness room requiring some 6:00 a.m. classtimes. Due to YMCA facilities, this class is limited to 12 students. This course may be taken 2 semesters. Maximum credits: 10.

STRENGTH TRAINING
Grades 11-12
One Semester - Before School - 2.5 Credits
One Semester - During School - 5 Credits
Elective

This course will be a co-ed class and a course available to all juniors and seniors. It is a course where an individual strength program will be developed for each student and that student will have an opportunity to put the program to use. Maximum credits: 10. After 10 Credits, this course may be taken with instructor permission for no credit and if during the school day will replace a study hall.

LEISURE ACTIVITIES
Grades 11*-12
One Semester - 2.5 Credits - Meets Every Other Day
Elective

The Leisure Activities class will involve various games and fitness activities that have recreational and leisuretime value. The curriculum will center around tennis, golf, co-ed volleyball, horseshoes, wallyball, bowling, and racquetball. Due to the use of public facilities, the weekly fee is approximately $2.00-$3.00. Grades are assessed on appropriate behavior, effort to improve skill level, and written rules and strategies exams. A student may take this course only one semester. Due to transportation, this class is limited to 8 students.
