A strong working knowledge of English grammar is recommended. College-bound students are strongly encouraged to take two years of the same language. If a student fails the 1st semester, he/she will be required to drop the class. If a student fails the 2nd semester and plans to retake the course, he/she will be required to audit and receive a passing grade the 1st semester of the class prior to repeating the 2nd semester.

SPANISH 8
Grade 8

Eighth grade Spanish is taught as an introduction to the Spanish language. Students will be asked to use useful, everyday Spanish phrases - names, numbers, colors, family and greetings. By the end of the quarter, students will be able to write simple sentences.

SPANISH I Grades 9-11
Elective
The primary purpose of this introductory course is reading comprehension, vocabulary and writing with limited oral communication. Students become aware of the culture and geography of Mexico and also become aware of its increasing popularity and influence in the United States.

SPANISH II Grades 10-12
Elective
This course continues instruction in Spanish I. Students will be responsible for the grammar and vocabulary in that course. Instruction will continue in the basic verb tenses. Classes of pronouns and sentence structure will be part of the instruction. A good working knowledge of English grammar is necessary. Students will be expected to practice speaking the target language and translating to a level of intermediate proficiency. Aural skills will also be developed.

SPANISH III Grades 11-12

Prerequisite: A grade average of “C” or better in Spanish II
The purpose of this course is to complete a student’s basic understanding of the target language. Grammar instruction will include a review of all verb tenses covered to date along with usage, types and placement of pronouns. Several new verb tenses will be introduced. Students will listen to lectures in Spanish and write assignments in the target language. Some quizzes will also be given in Spanish. Aural experiences will be provided through dialogues. Readings will deal with the Hispanic speaking nations.

SPANISH IV Grade 12
Elective
Prerequisite: A grade average of “C” or better in Spanish III This final course will prepare the student to be as proficient as possible in the target language. Grammar instruction will be reviewed and completed. Students will be expected to develop proficiency in reading Spanish periodicals, essays and works by Spanish authors. Oral experiences will include conversations with Hispanics, dialogues, telenovelas and conversations with classmates. Students will be exposed to Spanish history and life in the Hispanic world.
