A strong working knowledge of English grammar is recommended. College-bound students are strongly encouraged to take two years of the same language.

If a student fails the 1st semester, he/she will be required to drop the class. If a student fails the 2nd semester and plans to retake the course, he/she will be required to audit and receive a passing grade the 1st semester of the class prior to repeating the 2nd semester.

SPANISH 7
Grade 7
One Quarter
Required

Seventh grade Spanish is an exploratory class taught as an introduction to the Spanish people, their customs, their language, and their geography. Students will be introduced and asked to use useful, everyday Spanish phrases - names, numbers, colors, weather, family, greetings and holidays.

SPANISH 8
Grade 8
One Quarter
Required

Eighth grade Spanish is a review of all vocabulary and phrases learned in the seventh grade plus new vocabulary and culture. Students, with the aid or their notebooks, conjugate verbs and write simple sentences, make sentences negative and learn adjective placement and agreement.

SPANISH I
Grades 9-12

The primary purpose of this introductory course is reading comprehension, writing, and limited oral communication. Various classroom activities are employed so that students will provide answers to questions soliciting personal information, e.g. greetings, name, age, school, family, sports, foods, entertainment, clothes, transportation, careers, weather, etc. Students become aware of the culture and geography of Mexico and also become aware of its increasing popularity and influence in the United States.

SPANISH II
Grades 10 - 12

This intermediate course is taught language during approximately 50% of class time. The course places emphasis on beginning to listen to native speakers. Students are responsible for vocabulary and grammar covered in Spanish I. They will begin to recognize words without understanding complete text. Grammar is a continuation of Spanish I and includes two past tenses, more complex sentence structure, all classes of pronoun, and verb differentiation. A good working knowledge of English grammar is necessary. Culture and history of the Spanish-speaking world are also included in the course curriculum.

SPANISH III
Grades 11-12

Prerequisite: A grade average of "C" or better in Spanish II

This advanced course is for the student who plans to major in the Arts or Science. The main purpose is to acquire a proficiency in oral communication as well as written composition in a variety of prose situations. A variety of resource materials is used in reading, writing, contextual verbal situations, listening comprehension, and culture of the Spanish-speaking world. Major grammar concepts will be completed and various activities will help the student use all aspects of the language. This course should enable students to satisfy basic language communication.

SPANISH IV
Grade 12

Prerequisite: A grade average of "C" or better in Spanish III

This course is to teach the student to be as proficient as possible in the target language. Students will be able to be more involved in complex conversations with different dialects. They should have sufficient comprehension to understand conversations about needs and social conventions, sufficient control of the writing system to meet needs and social demands, be able to compose reports (300 words) or notes on very familiar topics, and handle routine social situations successfully with a culture barrier accustomed to foreigners. The student will have exposure to the complete grammar in Spanish and know grammar with confidence. However, upon completing the fourth year of Spanish study, a student will not yet be a fluent Spanish speaker unless Spanish is his/her first language.
