Alumni Basketball Celebrates 25th Anniversary
The annual Shamrock Alumni Basketball Tourney celebrated its 25th anniversary tournament the weekend of March 28-29. 216 men returned to Scotus and played on twenty-eight teams representing graduating classes that ranged from 1968 through 2007. Each participant received a hooded sweatshirt to mark the occasion and games were played Friday evening from 4:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. and Saturday from 9:00 a.m. through 5:00 p.m. Bracket winning teams were: 1996 (A Bracket), 1998 (B Bracket) and a combined team 1976-77-79 team (C Bracket.) A burger bash ran continuously from noon to 9:00 p.m. on Saturday for the participants, their families and spectators in the Memorial Hall cafeteria. During a brief Saturday evening program, championship t-shirts were awarded to the bracket winners and former Scotus coach and founder of the alumni tourney, Frank Spenceri, congratulated the participants for making this one of the premier alumni basketball tournaments in the state. Special thanks go to the burger bash sponsors: Hy-Vee, Carneco and Wimmers and to “burgermeister” Jeff Pekarek ’78 and his crew.
