Grading

Your grade in Algebra II is based on homework, quizzes, and tests.  The system is outlined below along with how the quarter and semester score is computed.

Homework

The percentages for all homework scores during the quarter will be averaged together.  Almost all homework assignments will be collected and recorded. Late homework is not accepted, except regarding illness as indicated in the student handbook. You can expect to complete about 20 assignments during a typical quarter.

Note that this is not a total point system. In other words, your average is not simply the points you've achieved divided by the total number of possible points. The approach you have to homework is probably the largest factor determining your success or failure. You'll have some assignment virtually every day. Try to do it on your own and get help when necessary. Have the attitude that you are studying for the test every day.

Quizzes

The percentages for all quiz scores during the quarter will be averaged together. We will take an average of one or two quizzes per week during a typical quarter. Quizzes may be announced in advance or they may be "pop quizzes".

We will take a problem-solving quiz at the completion of each chapter. A problem-solving quiz requires that you not only solve a problem, but explain in detail the process you used. The criteria for scoring your explanation is posted on the classroom wall. Problem-solving quizzes will be weighted like regular quizzes.

Tests

We will take a test at the completion of each unit of material. Each test will be assigned a percentage score. The low test score will not be thrown out and there are no retests. Tests will always be announced in advance.

Your Quarter Score

Your score for the quarter is the average of homework, quiz, and test scores. Both the homework and quiz averages weigh the same as one test.

Example: Let's say you receive the following scores for the quarter.

Homework Quizzes Test 1 Test 2 Test 3
89 82 95 84 91

Your quarter average is (89 + 82 + 95 + 84 + 91) / 5 = 88.

Your Semester Score

The semester test weighs 20%, while the quarter scores in the grading period weigh 40% each.

Example: Let's say you receive the following scores for the semester.

Quarter 1 Quarter 2 Semester Test
88 94 86

Your semester average is 88 * .4 + 94 * .4 + 86 * .2 = 90.
